Image

Each month of the custom home building schedule includes more decisions for the home owner. As work is done, there are more and more choices for the home owner. Keeping a journal of selections becomes important so that you can remember previous decisions for each room and exterior area of the home. As the home takes shape there is a certain order to things, and below is an example of how things might take shape over the course of building. Some homes will not take the entire year, but this gives an idea of the order in which things are done.

Custom home building Schedule Month-by-Month

Custom home building Schedule: 1st Month
Windows must be selected, and the exterior materials and colors will be chosen in the first month. Meanwhile the home builder or contractor will clear trees from the foundation pad area, and start digging and pouring the foundation. They will order materials for the floor, and the attic trusses, and install the steel and beams to be used.

In the second month the roofing materials must be ordered. Decisions on roofing, exterior siding and trim, stone work and plumbing fixtures will be extensive. Showers and tubs must be ordered and installed in the second month.

Custom home building Schedule: 3rd Month
During the third month exterior doors will be selected and the second floor framing will occur on your custom built home. Plumbing will begin being installed, and carpenters will start applying plywood sheathing to the exterior walls. Work will begin on exterior trim as well.

Custom home building Schedule: 4th Month
In the fourth month plywood will be used to cover the roof, followed by a layer of tarpaper to protect it until the roofing can be installed. Doors and windows will be installed. This is also the month for exciting additions like staircases, fireplaces and chimneys. Sewer lines will also be attached through underground lines this month.

Custom home building Schedule: 5th Month
The fifth month features the installation of the exterior siding, and trim. Plumbing lines will be installed as well. Central heat and air duct work will be installed and the electrical requirements will be marked and prepared for wiring. Drywall, interior doors and cabinets will be ordered and begin to be installed in the home.

Custom home building Schedule: 6th Month
By the sixth month roofing should be applied though in some climates this would be done much earlier, in the second month. The exterior should be completed and tile and stone flooring, will be installed. Sheetrock should be on all the interior walls by now.

Custom home building Schedule: 7th Month
During the seventh month interior painting and cabinetry installation will be among the more exciting additions. Flooring materials and bathroom tiles will also be installed, and porch, patio and pool flooring surfaces will be finished.

Custom home building Schedule: 8th through 10th Month
In the eighth, ninth and tenth month countertops will be delivered and installed once the cabinets are finished. The driveway will be completed and interior painting will continue. The electricians will start working to connect the electricity. Landscaping and lawn seeding may also occur during this period.

Custom home building Schedule: 11th and 12th Month
During the eleventh and twelfth month everything is coming together and the painting should be completed. The electricians will be installing outlets. Plumbing fixtures will be installed, and appliances central heat and air will be installed.
